Help Kids Achieve More with
the Power of Reading

After third grade, students stop learning to read and begin reading to learn. However, in some Iowa schools, more than half of students enter fourth grade without the skills necessary to further their education. If they’re still learning to read while their peers are learning new subjects, they continue to fall behind—which can impact their futures and leave them with fewer opportunities.

But you can help.

When you become a Reading Corps AmeriCorps Tutor, you can help students from kindergarten through third grade build the reading skills they need to catch up, keep up, and soar. Because students who are strong readers by the end of third grade are positioned to be strong learners for the rest of their lives.

Be a Superhero. Become a
Reading Corps Tutor.

Iowa Reading Corps AmeriCorps tutors meet with their students one-on-one for 20 minute sessions each school day. Equipped with training in nine interventions, tutors follow a program based on educational best practices and focus on phonics and fluency to make a direct impact on student success.

About AmeriCorps Reading Corps

AmeriCorps, often referred to as the “domestic Peace Corps,” is a network of national service programs that engage more than 75,000 Americans each year in intensive service to meet critical needs in the areas of education, public safety, health, and the environment. Individuals who serve in local AmeriCorps programs, like Iowa Reading Corps, make a commitment to dedicate themselves to service and to strive to make a positive impact in their communities. Iowa Reading Corps is a statewide initiative to help ensure that all Iowa students are on track to read at grade level by the end of 3rd grade. The program places AmeriCorps members, trained as Elementary Literacy Tutors, at sites across Iowa to implement prescribed literacy interventions for students who are just below proficiency in reading.
